A lot of people have a particular tree in mind when they
think Christmas tree—for some it’s a blue spruce, others prefer a fir and yet
others dare to be different and go for a white pine. Each kind has its high
points and low ones, choosing one over the other is simply a matter of
preference. To illustrate, a white pine is a more delicate tree in terms of
ornament stability. Only the lightest of ornaments should be placed on this
tree and go easy on the total amount. You don’t want to weigh this one down. A
spruce is dense with short needles and will take heavier ornaments but it will
drop its needles.

Here are a few general tips for choosing the right cut tree:
If you are not sure what kind of tree will be right for the room you have in mind, allow plenty of time to walk around the lot/farm until you can narrow it down. You don’t want to be rushed and spend the rest of the holiday feeling like the Grinch, muttering over picking the wrong tree.
• It may seem counter-intuitive, but purchase your tree early in the sales season to get the best trees. The longer you wait to buy one only means the one you end up with has been sitting in the lot the longest, exposed to the elements.
• Look for a tree that has few brown needles. Some are natural but you want the greenest tree you can find. The needles should also be supple and not pull off the branch when you run cupped hands down the branches; running them through your fingers.
• Make sure the base or trunk of the tree hasn’t been cut down too short because you are going to want to cut at least 1/4 inch off for a fresh end. Also, make sure the base is straight so that there are no complications fitting into the tree stand.
• Sounds simple but know the height of the room the tree is to go into and what diameter will be compatible with the ability to navigate through the room. You don’t want to be walking into the laden branches and knocking off important ornaments. This is especially important when you have a house with small children and pets.
• Make sure you are not taking anything home with you in the form of insects, eggs or four legged critters.
• Take your family with you to get everyone’s input. This is afterall a family holiday so make it an outing complete with hot chocolate and maybe some sledding. Enjoy it!
